From pizzaiolo failure to popular pizza alternative

05.06.2022

Folded up after being topped, the calzone is a popular alternative to the traditional pizza - also in the dieci assortment. A speciality filled with Italianità.

At first glance, the peculiarity of the calzone is striking: After being topped, the pizza is folded up. In Italy, it is rumoured that the calzone originated from a mishap. A pizzaiolo is said to have accidentally folded up the pizza when he tried to put it in the oven. The initial mishap quickly became a popular alternative to traditional pizza. While the calzone can't compete with dieci favourite Pizza Margherita, the folded pizza is one of our 15 most ordered products in the last quarter.

From Naples to Sicily

Calzone is available nowadays in a small version as to-go snack or as a main course in the size of a traditional pizza - just like it can be found in the dieci assortment. Italians are not entirely clear about the origins of the folded pizza. The calzone in the dieci assortment is the Sicilian version. Made of classic pizza dough and filled with tomato sauce, mozzarella, ham and egg. The Neapolitan calzone is simple and mostly vegetarian, filled only with tomato sauce and mozzarella. The recipe from Puglia consists of bread dough and is deep-fried.

Tasting is worthwhile

Be it origin or not, everyone agrees on calzone: the crescent-shaped, folded pizza is a tasty alternative to conventional pizza. It's worth trying. Ordered from one of our pizza delivery shop, our calzone is crispy and warm and brings the rich portion of Italianità a casa.
