Vegan? No need to give up pizza.
A piece of cake, thought the dieci team a few years ago. We can just replace the cheese.
Spoiler alert: it wasn’t that simple. The taste, consistency, texture and melting properties of vegan cheeses are sometimes very different.
What looks good on a plate gets far too runny in the oven, what melts nicely doesn’t taste good, and what tastes good loses its charm after a few minutes in a pizza box.
Some cheeses are more equal than others
So we asked some real professionals – 15 members of the Swiss Vegan Society – for a helping hand.
During the blind taste-test, they put the samples through their paces, discussed them and talked shop. First, the cheese was used on a freshly baked pizza. Then it had to pass the reality test: a few minutes of being kept warm in a pizza box.
In the end, Simply V’s grated vegan cheese was the clear winner. Made from almonds and coconut oil, it boasts an impressive flavour, good meltability and stable consistency – even after being delivered.
From savoury to sweet
Today, vegans are spoilt for choice at dieci: six vegan pizzas, plus countless options in the ‘Create your own pizza’ section, where they can put together bespoke creations using vegan cheese.
Three vegan salads add a touch of freshness, and they don’t have to look at the dessert options longingly anymore, either:
oat-based gelato cioccolato and an array of sorbets from strawberry to lemon promise a delicious end to any dieci meal – without compromises.
